So the hymn rolling around my head this week has been this one: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing! It seems that there is a resurgence lately of the importance of counting our blessings or of focusing on what the gift is in any situation no matter how difficult. In the 80’s it was called “the power of positive thinking” Psychologists have long been on that band wagon. And for good reason, when we give ourselves to seeking the positive, to focusing on the gifts and blessings in our lives there is a fundamental shift in our mental attitude and in our emotional well being, and for those of us who recognize the power of the Holy Spirit inside of us, there is an inner peace and strengthening.
No matter how we package the idea, the power of positive thinking, counting gifts, looking on the bright side of things: the original idea belongs to God! The scriptures are full of admonitions to God’s people to maintain an attitude of praise and thanksgiving at all times and in all things. Guess the God who wired us up must have known something about the overall health benefits of a positive mental attitude that modern day researchers and health professionals are still researching and finding out about!
So, I wake up about six days ago and this hymn that I haven’t even thought about in nigh on 20 years is playing in my head. I would love to be able to say that it was just one of those “Now where in the world did that come from?” moments that seem to just pop in from the blue, but the timing was too perfect to be coincidence. Confession: I’ve been on quite a grumbling roll the last two weeks. Every glass that I’ve encountered seemed half-empty to me and my rose colored glasses seriously smudged! Not exactly been drinking from the fount of every blessing……..
And so, here is this age old hymn that invades my weary mind in the wee hours of one morning! While there is such beauty in these simple words of old and they way they are arranged in 18th century English, the beauty is much deeper than that! It is the beauty of the treasure of a God’s love that pierces through the common theme of humanity: our weakness to wander away from that Love and to focus on everything but that Love! How priceless that an all powerful God would string our hearts to one tune! What a gift that we have been given to allow our hearts to sing the melody of worship to Him at all times and in all things!
There is so much I could say about this hymn and the words penned long ago. It is full of such meaning and insight! Yet, it is in the first stanza that I find the cry of my heart this week. Maybe you’ve found yourself letting the worries of the world change the tune you were created to sing; maybe grumbling has replaced praising and the glass has seemed half-empty for a long time. Maybe this old hymn can be a prayer of refreshement and renewal, a re-tuning of your heart as well. Here are the words that are the prayer of my heart today:
“Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
streams of mercy never ceasing
call for songs of loudest praise”
